In a harrowing ordeal that shook the Missouri University of Science and Technology community, a 20-year-old Indian student, whose identity remains undisclosed, was subjected to months of captivity and abuse in the US. His dreams of pursuing education were dashed as he fell victim to a vicious ordeal that culminated in a daring rescue by Missouri authorities on Wednesday.
The victim, allegedly held against his will by his cousin and two other men, faced unspeakable torment during his captivity. Reports reveal he was subjected to severe physical abuse, denied access to basic amenities, and forced into labor across three different homes.
Authorities intervened after receiving a distress call from a concerned citizen, leading to the arrest of Venkatesh R Sattaru, Sravan Varma Penumetcha, and Nikhil Verma Penmatsa. The trio faces charges including human trafficking, kidnapping, and assault. The victim, now receiving medical care for extensive injuries at a hospital, suffered from multiple fractures, lacerations, and extensive bodily trauma, highlighting the severity of the abuse he endured.
According to prosecutor Joe McCulloch, the victim was confined to a basement for over seven months, enduring a deplorable existence sleeping on a bare floor without access to basic sanitation facilities. Reports from a local newspaper further revealed the extent of the brutality, detailing the use of various objects for beatings, including wires, pipes, rods, boards, and even a water supply hose.
Expressing deep repulsion at the case, McCulloch condemned the inhumane treatment, stating, "It's absolutely inhumane and unconscionable that one human being could treat another human being like this."
The victim's ordeal began in April 2023, subjected to appalling abuse across different homes owned by Sattaru. Forced into grueling tasks from early morning till nightfall, the victim faced severe beatings for any perceived failure in completing the assigned chores. McCulloch revealed the victim was under constant surveillance and was punished for any lapse in satisfying his captors' demands.
Authorities found no one at Sattaru's residence upon visiting, and none of the accused have legal representation listed in court documents. McCulloch urged the public to report suspicious activities, emphasizing the crucial role played by concerned citizens in alerting authorities. The accused, held without bond at St. Charles County Jail due to their connections and wealth in India, face severe charges for their alleged actions.
